The Abortion Pill

The abortion pill method involves two drugs: mifepristone and misoprostol. Mifepristone, the first drug, blocks the hormone progesterone, which is necessary for the continuation of a pregnancy. The second medication, misoprostol, induces cramping and bleeding to expel the embryo from your body.

The FDA approves the use of these medications in pregnancy up to 70 days or 10 weeks. An ultrasound can help determine how far along the pregnancy is, ensuring accurate dating.

Risks involved with the abortion pill method include:

  • Incomplete or failed abortion which means pregnancy tissue remains inside the uterus.
  • Heavy and prolonged bleeding
  • Infection
  • Fever
  • Undiagnosed ectopic pregnancy

Surgical Abortion

The surgical procedure is used throughout the first trimester of pregnancy.  Local or general anesthesia may be used depending on the circumstances.

Risks involved with the surgical procedure include:

  • Perforation of the uterus which occurs when a surgical instrument punctures the uterus.
  • Damage to the cervix.
  • Scar tissue on the uterine wall.
  • Infection.
