Know Your Rights as a Student

One important thing to know right away: being pregnant does not mean you have to put your education on hold.

Under Title IX, colleges and universities that receive federal funding are not allowed to discriminate against students based on pregnancy or parenting status. This means you generally have the right to stay enrolled, attend classes, and continue participating in your program.

Schools are also required to provide reasonable accommodations related to pregnancy and childbirth. Depending on your situation, that could include excused absences for medical appointments, opportunities to make up missed work, and adjustments that allow you to keep moving forward academically.

Find Support on Campus and in the Community

Even if you feel alone right now, support may be closer than you think. Many campuses offer resources such as academic advising, counseling services, housing support, and referrals for childcare or student-parent programs.

Outside of campus, community organizations may also help with practical needs and emotional support. In fact, research shows that many college students are already balancing school and family responsibilities. You are not the first student to face this situation, and you do not have to navigate it without help.

Understanding Your Pregnancy Options

When you’re pregnant, you have three pregnancy options: parenting, adoption, or abortion.

  • Parenting may feel intimidating, especially if you’re thinking about balancing classes, work, and a baby. You might be wondering how you would manage housing, finances, or childcare while staying enrolled. Many students continue their education while parenting, especially when they have the right support in place.

At LaVie, we can walk alongside you by connecting you with community programs, practical assistance, and helpful resources designed to support you as you move forward in your pregnancy and parenting journey.

  • Adoption is available at no cost to birth parents. Adoption plans can look different depending on your preferences. We can connect you with reputable adoption agencies and help you understand your options.
  • Abortion is a serious medical procedure with potential complications. If you’re thinking about abortion, it’s important to confirm your pregnancy with a test and ultrasound to verify medical details.

At LaVie, we provide no-cost lab-quality pregnancy test and limited ultrasounds after a positive test. An ultrasound can help estimate how far along you may be, confirm the pregnancy is in the uterus, and check for a detectable heartbeat. This information can help you make a more informed decision about what comes next.
