Not sure what pregnancy option to choose when faced with an unexpected pregnancy? No decision is an easy one. If you’re going back and forth between adoption and abortion, here is more information to help you make an informed decision.
What is Abortion Like?
Abortion is a serious medical decision that comes with health risks you will want to consider.
Like adoption, it is important to receive more information about this option before deciding. You will also want to confirm your pregnancy details to determine eligibility for this option.
There are two types of abortion procedures: medical abortion and surgical abortion. A medical abortion consists of two different drugs, mifepristone and misoprostol.
According to the Mayo Clinic, potential risks of medical abortion include:
- The body not releasing all pregnancy tissue in the uterus, also called an incomplete abortion. This may require surgical treatment.
- An ongoing pregnancy if the procedure doesn’t work.
- Heavy and prolonged bleeding.
- Infection.
- Fever.
- Digestive symptoms such as upset stomach.
Surgical abortion is much more invasive and involves dilating the cervix and using surgical instruments to end and remove the pregnancy. Potential risks of this type of abortion include:
- Infection
- Uterine perforation
- Damage to the cervix
- Scar tissue on the uterine wall
What is Adoption Like?
Adoption is the legal process that allows a family to take responsibility for another’s child. There is more than one type of adoption plan to choose from, including:
- Open adoption: This adoption type allows you, as the birth mother, to be in regular contact with your child. You will be able to directly communicate with the adoptive family and build a relationship with your child. This could include visitation, emails, phone or video calls, and other forms of communication.
- Closed adoption: This type of adoption does not allow communication between you and the adoptive family. Contact information will not be shared.
- Semi-open adoption: All communication is done through a third party—an adoption agency or an attorney. Contact information is not shared between you and the adoptive parents. The adoptive family can send you updates about the child through the third party.
